scanner not working

i have a cheiftain cft300 scanner which i cant get to work on windows xp
there is no plug and play port and it plugs into the printer port, but the printer i have is connected to the usb port , therfore there is no printer pluged into the scanner , as this is the case should the scanner the work

The scanner should function whether there's a printer attached or not

Is it listed under Device Manager?

No its not listed under the device manager , i have loaded via a cd rom that came with it which went ok, also loaded photoimpact ok as well but Textbridge clasic will not load,
on opening photoimpact and selecting source the pc will pick up the scanner from that but then when using aquire program closes with an
message to check connections and power
the scanner did work on my old machine win 95
even if it was very slow , and by changing the compatibility mode to 95, it goes past the first stage but then returns "cannot find twain dll"

Are the drivers on the CD specifically for WinXP?

Is your PC's parallel port set to EPP/ECP?
