SPACE Debut Album
March
sees the release of the debut album on randm by Space. If
Blur were the Kings of Britpop, then Space could easily
have been referred to as the Court Jesters of the British
musical scene of the late nineties, with their witty lyrics
and vaudeville-esque rock sound.
The greatest thing about Space is that they didn’t have
to resort to adopting an ‘image’ to get ahead, they managed
it purely on the merit of their music and their raw charisma,
achieving 7 Top 30 singles including "Female Of The
Species", number 14 in 96,"Me And You Versus The
World", number 9 in 96,"Neighbourhood",number
11 in 96,"Dark Clouds", number 14 in 97,"Avengeing
Angels", number 6 in 97,and "Bad Days" in
98.
The first album "Spiders" charted at 5 in the
UK ,the second, "Tin Planet", debuted at number
3 two years later. The combined sales of these album are
over 3/4 of a million in the UK.
Legal wrangles caused a hiatus in the band's recording career
but they stayed true to their hard core fans, delivering
them an album's worth of free material via the internet
whilst they sorted out their business before starting to
record new songs for a brand new album, recorded in their
home town of Liverpool.
Their forthcoming album "Suburban Rock 'n' Roll"
shows how far Space have developed since their first musical
offerings in 1996. Their fantastically unique style is still
very much in evidence, but the overall sound is much darker
and mature. Tommy Scott once said that he derived his inspiration
for his lyrics from Tarantino movies and Looney Tunes cartoons.
This album shows much more evidence of the darker Tarantino
influence.
The songs are still incredibly catchy, particularly "Suburban
Rock 'n'Roll", the title track and first single, the
anthem-like ‘Zombies’ and ’20 million miles from Earth’,
but stylistically they are much more accessible to a new
audience. Space’s music seems to have developed to adapt
to the changing tastes of their fans; moving from distinctive
pop sensibilities to a redefinition of rock.
Stand by for the announcement of their UK spring tour.
