I reckon about 1/3 to 1/2 times it freezes or blue screens during startup.

>How do you connect to the internet?

Using a SupraSST 56i PRO SP modem, and Internet Explorer / Outlook Express.

A couple of things spring to mind, possibly the memories bad or the CPU's overheating. If you look in the BIOS it usually reports what the system and CPU temps are, post back what these are. You can download a memory tester from here :- http://www.memtest86.com give it a go and report back whether it passed or not.

Errrm... I did say we weren't techie!

I have managed to download the memtest86 but it doesn't seem to want to run - ie I installed iton a floppy and when I reboot the computer it just starts normally.

And how do I 'look in the BIOS'???

Sorry for being so thick!

It probably didn't boot from the floppy disk due to the boot order which is set in the BIOS.

When you first turn your PC on you should get a message like "Press DEL to enter setup", pressing the DEL key at that time will take you into the BIOS.

Usually in the Advanced Settings section there will be a list of boot devices, it will go through these in the order they appear, you will need to make sure that the floppy disk is the first in the list for it to boot from it. One of the other sections will display the temperatures.

OK, thanks - I can report some progress!

Passed the memtest86 OK - though the first time through it did crash (ie screen went blank and it began to boot up again). But second time though the default test it was all fine.

Looked in the BIOS but couldn't find anything that looked like temperatures in any of the sections...

Over to you!

Do you know what make/model of motherboard is in your PC, (there should be a model number silk screened on the board somewhere ;) )

Try running the memory test a few times.
